East Kilbride Handball Club was originally started in 1972 and based in the John Wright Sports Centre [2], in the same year that the Scottish Handball Association was formed. Also in this year the EK Ladies Team took part in the first ever Ladies Handball Match in Great Britain against a team from Bell College, Hamilton.[3] In 1982 East Kilbride Handball Club merged with a club from Barrhead called Allander Handball Club to form EK82 Handball Club, and went on to win both the Scottish and British Leagues [4] winning the honour of representing the British Handball Association in the European Cup of 1983/84 [5]. The following season, 1983/84, EK82 retained both the Scottish and British Championships and represented Scotland at the Natwest Inter 84 Tournament [6] hosted by Whitchurch Bristol Handball Club. In 2004 the juniors entered the Partille Cup, the largest handball tournament in the world [7]. In 2009 the Juniors won the Scottish League and Cup double.
EK82's opponents in their only European Cup adventure to date was THW Kiel of Germany. The first leg was played at the Kiel Ostseehalle, in Germany in front of a crowd of 3500 on 30 September 1983, a game which East Kilbride were to lose 43:8 (21:2 at half time)[8]. The second leg was played in the Cogenkrooghalle, Neustadt in Germany in front of a 800 capacity crowd on 3 October 1983[9]. Again the home side were to lose to the German Champions, this by a score of 6:44 (2:18 at half time) ending their run in the competition.[5]
East Kilbride represented Great Britain in the European Cup Winners Cup during season 1975/76.[10]
East Kilbride were drawn against the Belgian outfit, Progres HC Seraing, in a 2 legged encounter.
The first match was at the John Wright Sports Centre in front of a crowd of 500 spectators [1], a match which the home side were to lose 17-43.
The return leg saw East Kilbride lose 7-35.
EK82 began by entering a senior men's team into the 2009/10 Scottish Handball League and the Scottish Handball Association Cup. The season commenced on the 3 October 2009 with all games (League and Cup) taking place at Blackburn, West Lothian.
For full details on results and fixtures for season 2009/10 visit Scottish Handball Season 2009/10.
The club has extended its influence in the following 2010/2011 season to include a womans team. With improvements occurring both in the SHA and EK82 club, ambitions are to keep things moving forward. The inclusion of Ravenscraig sports centre in this season gives both the men and women the chance at playing full court.
The Senior section are sponsored by Palfinger. The team have been supplied with new kits for seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11.
